Monitoring Regional Planning Performance in South East Queensland

  • Mr Russ Josipovic, Qld Department of Infrastructure and Planning, Australia

  • South East Queensland is Australia’s fastest growing metropolitan region and is projected to grow by more than 1.5 million people over the next 22 years to 2031. Although this population growth contributes to growth in other sectors of the economy, it also leads to demands for improved infrastructure and services. To meet these demands, a comprehensive understanding of development activity is required.

    The Queensland Government’s Department of Infrastructure and Planning utilises spatial information systems to identify and monitor changes in demographics, housing demands and development activity across the region. Specifically, the Department’s urban development team has developed systems to:

    * Identify dwelling potential from infill /redevelopment and broadhectare land stocks;
    * Identify industrial land supplies;
    * Monitor development approvals, production and sales; and
    * Identify of the number of years of supply available.

    Together with extensive industry consultation and the monitoring of these spatially referenced urban development components enables the identification of regional priorities which are critical to informing future planning review processes.
