Skilling Australia with Spatial Vocational Education & Training
Following the implementation of National Training Packages in the early 1990’s it wasn’t until 2008 that a Training Package (CPP08 Property Services) covering both surveying and spatial information services (SIS) was published. The Training Package includes qualifications up to Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 6 (Advanced Diploma). For TAFE South Australia, these qualifications were seen as an opportunity to redevelop course content, review delivery methodology and explore new avenues for workplace assessment, Recognition of Prior Learning and VET in Schools. Coincident to the development of the training package, TAFESA also developed two new qualifications at AQF levels 7 and 8, a Vocational Graduate Certificate and Vocational Graduate Diploma in Spatial Information Services. These qualification levels are new for the VET sector and are proven pathways for University and TAFE graduates and offer professional development opportunities. The distinguishing feature of TAFE education is a strong emphasis on vocational skills and industry engagement. AT TAFESA, course work and assessment is centred around outdoor activities and computer applications and participation in multiple field expeditions. These “real work” activities are undertaken on behalf of various organisations and levels of government and follow the full cycle of data capture, processing and GIS integration, which lead to a range of spatial information products and services. These approaches provide students with a broad range of skills and knowledge applicable in a range of disciplines and provide industry with professional resources. Also discussed are new challenges including growing demands for eLearning, changes to funding models and university engagement.
