Managing Assets - Spatially and Graphically

  • Mr Recep Alakus, Hume City Council, Australia
  • For many years GUI based applications had undisputed monopoly in the area of assets and facilities management. These applications generally deal with a base data in tabular format in multiple columns and rows by accessing a data server or standalone desktop environment.

Occasionally, necessity forces users of these applications to create linkages to a spatial, mapping application to merely see the locations of the objects that are being managed. In most cases creating these linkages requires great deal of effort and in all cases they are tenuous and difficult to maintain.

Hume City Council has developed a Roads and Pavements Asset Management Application fully based on processes of Spatial Technology. The system also includes field data collection and work order process with the aid of GPS, tablet PC’s and blue tooth camera and 3G/GPRS relaying data live back to GIS server in the office.

The simple philosophy of this process is to regard any asset or its component as an object and place it spatially in its exact place on the surface of the earth and build all the management tools around it.

This presentation will illustrate how data derived directly from subdivision processes and loaded on GIS Server and build all the necessary processes for management and maintenance of the assets.
