Planning Applications Adelaide 3D Model

  • How does a Capital City Local Government use a 3D model? What application areas can utilise the model for better decision making? Adelaide City Council in common with a number of other major Cities has recently developed a 3D model. This presentation will look at the applications of the 3D model and 3D GIS across areas that would not necessarily be identified as users of spatial information. While the technical issues associated with the model were managed by the GIS-IT, the scoping of application was driven by the City Planners, looking for new tools to better plan and manage the future strategic outcomes for the City of Adelaide.

This presentation will work through the background of the "why" develop a 3D model as this highlights the process of engaging with all areas within council and the resulting 'ideas' for using the model. The 3D model has applications in development planning, strategic planning, urban design, heritage management, economic development, sustainable cities research, information sharing and communicating internally and to the wider community via web based applications. The main focus will be in highlighting the diversity of 3D applications and the potential to develop into new areas.
