Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation Options For Southern Australian Landscapes
It seems that climate change will inevitably impact on the agricultural production, natural environments, and communities in southern Australian regions. Regional development and natural resource management agencies need to identify those areas and land use practices that are most at risk from adverse effects of climate change and identify adaptation strategies and policy options to support planning and management. The research developed an adaptation decision framework using computer modelling, mapping and multi-objective optimisation to identify new combinations of environment, land use, social and economic factors that give the best chance for regions to adapt. The aim was to quantify the spatial distribution of a range of values across the landscape including agricultural productivity and environmental value associated with different land use and management alternatives. Further, the group will aim to quantify how these values might change under future climates. We identified alternative regional land use, institutional, service and business arrangements that will assist the adaptation of regional communities to warmer temperatures, less reliable rainfall and more limited surface water resources.
