"Retracing the Canning Stock Route" a Documentary Film by Peter McConkey

  • Miss Kirby Gamble, Curtin University of Technology, Australia
  • Mr Joseph Mahoney, Curtin University of Technology, Australia
  • Mr Tony Snow, Curtin University of Technology, Australia
  • Objective:
To follow and film the hardships, mateship and work performed by the members of the Canning Stock Route Expedition 2008. Most importantly to document the discovery of Alfred Cannings original survey marks, placed over 100 years ago.

    Methods:
Initial planning was performed by the surveying students and surveying mentors prior to the media students arrival to the group. Funds were raised through the supporting industry sponsors. A. W. Cannings field notes were gathered and analysed. Media logistics were discussed and organised, how many tapes, which equipment to take and the processing and presentation of footage. The media crew was to accompany different survey crews each day.

    Results and Conclusion:
A great success, with over 70 hours of footage taken and the best bits cut out and made into the documentary, that was a challenge. Survey wise, also a huge success, with the completion of all required work and more, and the 700km GPS traverse.

A wonderful experience, expertly cut down to a 30minute documentary that will be a tribute to the Centenary celebration and Curtin University resurvey of the Canning Stock Route, performed in July 2008.

*****We are actually hoping to show the documentary, if possible. We are quite happy to send a copy to view before decision is made*****
