The notes of AW Canning and other surveyors were gathered and analysed. A section of the route was selected and the logistics of the trip documented, including camping and survey equipment, supplies including fuel and food, personnel, permits and advice to landowners and media outlets. A detailed itinerary was drawn up including all proposed camping spots and daily activities.
Results/Conclusion
Over the 16 days 7 BM’s were upgraded to State Survey Marks, 12 cadastral connections to remote cadastral lease boundary posts were completed, four of Canning’s original survey marks were located and positioned by GPS and a level traverse error was discovered and corrected. With over 4500 (on 12megapixel camera) pictures taken and 70 hours of video footage shot as well.
The expedition was a huge success in all areas. An incredible amount of survey work was completed at good accuracy and the students learnt new skills while being mentored by surveying professionals. All members now have a greater respect for the surveyors of old.
