  • The Arid Lands Information System (ALIS) is a web-based, spatially enabled data capture, storage, querying and reporting tool developed within the Knowledge and Information Division of the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLBC). ALIS has been developed to replace the legacy systems previously used by DWLBC and by the South Australian Arid Lands Natural Resource Management (NRM) Board. ALIS aims to be a single point of access for data and information about the arid areas of SA. The ALIS integrates spatial and textual data into a single geodatabase allowing authorised users to display, create, edit, query and report on both spatial and textual data via a single graphical user interface in real time. Users can create, edit and save point and polygon features and attribute the data through on-screen forms. They can also upload and download spatial and textual data and information directly to the geodatabase. The ALIS is integrated with mobile mapping applications to allow field staff to access the latest available data in real time as well as upload recently captured data. . Security is also handled spatially, with some users able to access data related only to their particular region (eg pastoral station or NRM region). The association of a users login to a specific polygon returns only the data contained within that polygon through the use of spatial queries.
