The Victorian Land Use Information System

  • The Victorian land Use Information System is a current project funded by the Departments of Primary Industries and Sustainability and Environment in Victoria. Victorian has a state wide land use map that was developed in collaboration with the Bureau of Rural Science between 1996 and 2005. This information is widely used; however, is quickly becoming out dated. Therefore the objective of the VLUIS is to create a consistent and accurate process that can map land tenure, land use and land cover data on a yearly basis for the state of Victoria. Without such a consistent measuring and mapping process critical monitoring and modelling analysis cannot be considered reliable. The VLUIS spatially integrates three main sources of information. Land tenure information is extracted from Crown Land Status as a simplified version for the primary field. Land use data is obtained from the valuations data collated by the Valuer General Victoria for the secondary field. Land cover is the third field and is created through a time series analysis of remotely sensed imagery. The result is a dataset that, for each parcel across Victoria, describes the land tenure, land use and land cover on a yearly basis. In 2010 the first full state wide product will be available for use by all. A critical finding from the development of the VLUIS is that it is essential to separately classify land use and land cover. This ensures a consistent process over time which therefore aids change detection and analysis.
